Calabama

Calabama

I was craving a breakfast sandwich the other day and was in the mood to try someplace different. I googled “breakfast” near me and Calabama popped up. It was quick, the reviews were great, and I decided to give it a try.

Upon arrival I was met with my first annoyance. I wanted to order the OG Breakfast Sandwich but they have a strict no modifications policy. (The menu says “trust us, you’ll love it!” but I, in fact, did not love it). As someone with food intolerances I generally find strict no modifications policies annoying. Yes, on the rare occasion it serves to protect the integrity of the dish, but most of the time it’s unnecessary and snobbish. That was certainly the case here. I decided to order the sandwich anyway and remove the onions by hand. Turns out the onions they refused to remove were four wimpy little onions that, had they been left on, would not have had much of an impact on the taste of the sandwich.

When I arrived home and opened the sandwich, it was soggy. It was only about a five minute drive back to my apartment, so I doubt that’s the reason why. Even if so, they certainly need to work on their packaging. Since they don’t have much seating, their primary demographic will likely be take-out and pickup orders. I had to pop the sandwich in the toaster oven because I was not about to eat a soggy sandwich. Sadly, the toaster oven did not help much, as the sandwich was still pretty bland. The egg came in one massive block (like those frozen eggs they put on fast food sandwiches) and the dipping sauce was nothing special. They make a big deal about their “signature” dipping sauce but it didn’t taste that much different from your typical sweet and spicy sauce. The biscuit was good, I’ll give them that. Overall, I was quite disappointed that I had wasted $18 on a sandwich I could have made much better at home. This place is definitely overpriced for the value, very mid, and I will not be returning. I don’t understand why it has such good reviews.
