Botanica, Silver Lake

Botanica, Silver Lake

What is Easter without brunch? I’d seen Botanica pop up on various “Best Brunch in LA” articles and social media posts, so when my friend proposed it for Easter brunch I was excited to check it out. Nestled on a quiet stretch of Silverlake Blvd., the location has a market-meets-coffee-shop vibe and while it feels more like a cafe than a restaurant, the food is more restaurant quality than cafe fare.

I ordered a matcha latte, which was delicious and beautifully presented, and the Turkish eggs. Although a simple dish, it was packed with flavor, and the combination of eggs, chile butter, and garlic yogurt slathered on focaccia hit the spot. My friend ordered the cake for breakfast which was also good, although a bit dry for my liking, perhaps because it was gluten-free.

The service was mediocre. While our server was really sweet, she took forever between check-ins and at one point disappeared for so long that the barista had to come help us out. We thought she’d finished her shift and left, though she later reappeared blaming a large party in the outdoor patio. Normally I would’ve been annoyed, but didn’t mind because it’d been a while since I’d seen my friend and it gave us more time to catch up. That said, this might be a place you go when you’re in the mood for a leisurely meal and are not in a rush.

Overall, I enjoyed the food and would return either for brunch or to try their dinner menu. Although it really seems like more of a daytime spot. The nice thing about going for brunch is you can walk around and explore the neighborhood afterwards. Only a couple of blocks away lies Sunset Blvd., where we spent the afternoon checking out the various shops. As we walked we also happened upon the iconic Micheltorena Stairs which was a fun little surprise, and one of Silverlake’s many hidden staircases. Definitely worth checking out and snapping a pic or two for Instagram!
