I was struggling with what to eat (yet again) and finally decided I was in the mood for tacos. Now tacos are a difficult food for me because I’m onion-intolerant and most tacos are flavored with onions, usually pico de gallo or some other onion-based sauce. Get rid of the ingredients with onions and 9 times out of 10 you’re left with just a tortilla and meat, which is dry, bland, and not a very enjoyable meal. So I am pretty much always on the lookout for a not-boring taco place with tacos that have delicious onion-free sauces and cremas. As I was perusing Yelp for taco places nearby, I came across Tacos Tu Madre. I clicked on their menu, and lo and behold – all sorts of fancy taco options! I was thrilled.

Upon arriving I mentioned that it was my first time there and the staff was very friendly and walked me through the menu. I especially liked that you can order any option as either a taco, burrito, or bowl, and they have plenty of both carnivorous and non-carnivorous options for the LA crowd. You order and pay at the front, then receive a number and seat yourself in the lovely outdoor patio. It was very nicely decorated and the speakers were playing lively Spanish music. Almost immediately a server brought chips, salsa, and water, which was beautifully presented in a jug with cucumber and hibiscus flowers. I ordered the grilled chicken, Korean bbq, pastrami, potato, squash blossom, and mushroom tacos, and removed any onion-containing ingredients. It was difficult to choose because they had such a variety and everything looked delicious. Each taco arrived on its own individual plate, and almost as soon as I finished with each taco a server popped in to clear the empty plate. I was surprised by, yet greatly appreciated the attentive and friendly service. All of the tacos were good, but the Korean bbq and squash blossom tacos were the clear winners – they were absolutely delicious. I will most definitely be returning to order them again, as well as to try some of the other tacos on the menu.

If you’re coming at night for dinner parking is difficult in the area, so something to keep in mind. But otherwise the price point is great for the quality, the food is delicious, and the ambiance is wonderful – day or night. They also have a nice cocktail menu, so it’s a great spot to grab drinks with friends. I myself will absolutely be coming back, and highly recommend!
